The 2025 Gubbio Award for Latin America and the Caribbean has been awarded to the Debaines Hotel Santiago, in a competition that brought together more than 40 urban projects in 32 cities across the continent. The Gubbio Prize seeks to promote the unity of the historical-urban landscape, recognizing projects that protect heritage and improve urban quality. The Debaines project, presented by Sabbagh Arquitectos and Bascuñán Valenzuela Arquitectos Asociados, took home the top award.
The architecture of the Debaines hotel was praised for its sensitive integration into one of Santiago's most historic neighborhoods and for its contribution to the revitalization of the city's classic downtown area.
It combines elements and inspirations from the nearby National Opera House, the Municipal Theater of
Santiago, designed by French master Brunet-Debaines, and the heritage building of the
the oldest agricultural society in the world, the SNA, and merges them with a 21st-century urban style.
This Gubbio distinction originated in Italy and Europe and was created in 1990 by ANCSA, the National Association of Historic and Artistic Centers of Italy (
). In 2009, it was introduced in Latin America and the Caribbean (
) in cooperation with the historic preservation authorities of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Havana, Cuba (
).
The Gubbio distinction is awarded to cities that meet specific criteria, including the preservation of historic buildings, the promotion of cultural heritage, and the development of sustainable tourism. The award is given to cities that have made significant efforts to preserve their historic centers and promote cultural heritage.
